Silver Chain Guide

Why the chain exists

Players have watched Geralt swing a silver chain since the 2007 Witcher intro and since the striga sequence in Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Last Wish. It never became a reliable in-game tool. Fool’s Theory and CD Projekt Red told preview outlets that earlier prototypes felt too clumsy. Remastered combat timing is what made the hook usable. Songs of the Past, the paid 2027 expansion, is the first chapter that puts the chain on your radial instead of in a cutscene.

This page is the dedicated how-to. The broader combat recap lives in the how to play guide. Button placement lives in the controls guide. Matchups against Swarmions, Thornblooms, and the Slumbering Knight live in the new monsters primer. Geralt covers why the White Wolf is holding extra steel in the key art; the chain is a different limb.

Slot rules: it is not a third sword

Preview developers were consistent on one mechanical fact: the chain occupies the same equipment slot as the crossbow. You aim it with similar grammar. You cannot have the chain and the crossbow equipped at the same time. Keep a crossbow in inventory if you want, but the active ranged slot is one or the other.

Two fire modes showed up in gamescom footage and in the GameSpot overview stream:

  • A fast throw, used like a panic hook when a backliner is already mid-shot.
  • A held aim that slows time, paints weak points on the target, and lets you choose a limb or a head before the chain flies.

The aimed mode is the one that matters against armor. The Slumbering Knight’s bark-shield arm is the textbook weak-point target. Swarmions hide a cadaver inside a hornet cloud; the slow overlay is how you pick the body instead of the insects. Timed sword hits after a successful pull can trigger new finishers, including a decapitation shown in hands-off demos.

What the chain is not: a replacement for Yrden, a replacement for Igni on plant monsters, or a free skip of oils. Thornblooms still spit acid from underground. A giant burrowing centipede in the Kotaku closed-door demo dove under Geralt’s steel; a hook does not automatically solve a target that is not on the surface. Use the chain to change spacing, then finish with the kit you already know.

How to beat the fights that justify the slot

Swarmions. Reanimated cadavers wrapped in hornets. Polygon and Kotaku both described the cloud as a shield. Pull one body out of the choir, burn or cut it, then repeat. Standing in the swarm is how you eat poison and staggers you did not budget.

Thornblooms / Thorn Flowers. Tall, sprouting plants that fire acid or large poisonous projectiles and can attack from underground. The chain can yank a visible bloom; it cannot yank a plant that has already reset into dirt. Igni, freeze bombs, and patience still carry this matchup. The new monsters page keeps the naming variants in one place.

The Slumbering Knight. Count Humbert’s remains in the Garden of Thorns footage: a rooted corpse that grows a bark shield and thorned tendrils. Developers used the chain to break that guard, then took the opening with silver. Quen covers the tendril you fail to dodge. This is a boss pattern, not a roadside ghoul. The Bed of Thorns quest is where that fight sits in the opening story.

Practice both throws before you treat the chain as a panic button. If you only tap, you skip weak points. If you only snipe, you eat a claw while the overlay is up. Map the aimed mode to a comfortable trigger now, using the crossbow as a rehearsal, because Remastered arrives 29 September 2026 and the expansion does not.

How to find it, how to keep it

CD Projekt Red has not published a pickup quest named “obtain the chain.” Preview Geralt already has it wrapped on his arm during A Bed of Thorns. Treat it as kit you receive with the expansion rather than as a hidden diagram in a cave. Whether it remains equipped outside Letten is a design comment, not a patch note: developers said they wanted the tool to stay consistent with Geralt’s arsenal, so do not assume it is region-locked until the 2027 menus say so.

Key art still shows a third sword. That blade is a story object, not the chain. Do not confuse the two when you read Geralt or the story overview.

What is still unconfirmed

  • Damage numbers, upgrade diagrams, and whether the chain has runewords.
  • Exact weak-point catalogs per monster.
  • Whether a Mutation or a mutagen will modify hook speed. New mutagens are confirmed for the Remastered/expansion era; see the mutagens guide.
  • Full controller glyphs. Use the controls guide as a template, not as an official overlay.

Songs of the Past is still upcoming and paid. You cannot farm chain parts in 2026. You can install Remastered, park a Toussaint save from Getting Started, and get used to aimed ranged tools so the first Swarmion in Letten is a pull, not a menu hunt.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Songs of the Past, Letten, and the Remastered upgrade.

Does the silver chain replace Geralt's swords?

No. It occupies the crossbow slot. You still fight with steel, silver, Signs, bombs, and oils. Details sit in how to play.

Can I use the chain and the crossbow at once?

Preview developers said you cannot equip both at once. Keep the unused tool in inventory if you want to swap.

How do I beat the Slumbering Knight with the chain?

Aim the held throw at the bark guard, pull to open it, then cut. The fight belongs to the Bed of Thorns quest and the new monsters notes.

Is the chain in the base Remastered upgrade?

No. Remastered on 29 September 2026 rebuilds combat feel. The chain is an expansion tool for Songs of the Past in 2027. Read the Remastered notes.
