How to Play Guide

Still The Witcher 3, with a new limb

Songs of the Past does not replace Geralt’s kit. You still oil blades, brew Swallow, paint Igni across a pack, and listen before you swing. What changes is the floor under that kit. The Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade dated 29 September 2026 rebuilds combat feel, camera tracking, and progression presentation. The expansion then adds a silver chain on Geralt’s arm and asks you to treat overheard gossip as quest state. If you skip Remastered, you do not play Letten. If you skip the chain, you will fight Swarmions and the Slumbering Knight with one hand tied.

This guide is about how the game plays, not how to finish every contract. Install and save advice sits in Getting Started. The dedicated hook, slot, and weak-point page is the silver chain guide. Button-level mapping sits in the Controls Guide. Monster roles sit on the new monsters page. The opening quest that already has the chain equipped is A Bed of Thorns. Geralt covers the character; this page covers the hands.

Remastered combat, camera, and progression

Remastered combat is the same rock-paper-scissors of light, heavy, dodge, and parry, tightened. Developers described being able to change target while an attack animation is already playing, so a missed click does not dump the combo into empty air. The camera follows a dodge under a swing and tries to keep the intended enemy in frame. Finishers are more numerous. Enemy pathing and road behavior were called out as quality-of-life work, not as a new genre.

Progression is still the ability tree you know, plus Blood and Wine mutations if you bring that save. Nothing public says Songs of the Past deletes those systems. Treat Letten as a late-game region: decoctions, oils, and grandmaster habits still pay. The new weapon does not replace Quen or a silver sword. It sits beside them.

The adaptive camera also matters in conversation. Preview sessions noted more directed shots at the de Lettenhove table than the 2015 talking-head default. That is presentation, not a QTE. You still pick lines. You just see Lilla and the grandmother framed like a scene instead of two mannequins against a wall.

The silver chain as a slot, not a third sword

The chain wraps Geralt’s arm. Long-time players know it from the first Witcher’s opening cinematic and from the striga sequence in The Last Wish. Designers said earlier attempts felt too clumsy; Remastered’s combat pass is what made the toy usable. In Songs of the Past it occupies a quick-use slot in the same family as a Sign, a bomb, or the crossbow. Preview coverage described it sharing the crossbow’s aiming grammar: a fast throw, or a held aim that slows time and shows weak points.

What it is for:

  • Crowd control. Swarmions and other grouped threats can be yanked out of a pack so you fight one body instead of a cloud.
  • Pulling ranged pests. Flying or backline monsters get dragged into sword range.
  • Breaking armored guards. The Slumbering Knight, a skeletal figure rooted in bark and bone, uses a guard your swords bounce off until the chain opens it.
  • Finishers. Timed hits after a successful hook can play new kill animations, including decapitations shown in hands-off footage.

What it is not: a replacement for Yrden traps, a replacement for Northern Wind, or a free win against Thorn Flowers hiding under soil. You still need oils, bombs, and patience. Developers also noted the chain is designed to stay consistent with Geralt’s arsenal outside Letten, so the slot is not a region-locked gimmick. Exact loadout rules (whether you can keep a crossbow in inventory while the chain is equipped) should be confirmed in your own menus; public talks compared it to the crossbow slot and said you cannot have both equipped at once.

Practice the two throws. The tap is for panic. The aimed shot is for a Slumbering Knight’s bark arm or a Swarmion’s head inside the hornets. If you only tap, you will waste the weak-point system. If you only snipe, you will eat a claw while the slow-motion overlay is up. The Controls Guide is where that maps to keyboard, mouse, and pads; official remap lists for the expansion have not been published yet.

Signs, alchemy, and the old bestiary tricks

Letten is not a Signs tutorial. Aard still opens a stagger window. Igni still hates nests, insects, and plant monsters. Quen still saves greedy rolls. Axii still matters in villages where a festival crowd is denser than Velen’s empty roads. Alchemy remains the quiet advantage: Golden Oriole before poison, Thunderbolt before a knight, Petri’s Philter if you want Signs to carry a Swarmion burn.

Thorn Flowers are an archespore variant. They fight from underground and fire large poison projectiles. That is a bomb-and-Igni problem as much as a chain problem. Swarmions are reanimated cadavers wrapped in hornets; fire and a pull both work, and standing in the cloud does not. The Slumbering Knight is the armored lesson. Read the new monsters primer so you are not improvising oils at the well.

Returning Witcher 3 enemies still appear. Do not retire Necrophage oil because a trailer showed a new skeleton. Letten mixes folklore threats with the old bestiary on purpose.

Investigation, NPC days, and knowledge that travels

Fool’s Theory and CD Projekt Red spent preview time on NPC routines. Settlements in Letten are denser than Velen hamlets. People work, drink, and walk festival routes instead of idling on a marker. That is not flavor text. Quests can unlock a dialogue option because Geralt overheard a fact from an unrelated NPC. One gamescom puzzle worked exactly that way: knowledge carried between conversations.

Play it like a detective, not like a checklist.

  • Use Witcher Senses in the estate, the village, and the Garden of Thorns the same way you used them in the Baron’s rooms.
  • Talk twice. A baker at noon may not offer the line a baker at dusk will.
  • Do not sprint past Belleteyn extras. Festival crowds are where rumors live.
  • If a dialogue option appears after a side conversation, that is the system working. Take it.

Lilla is a companion through stretches of the investigation. She is not a second combat character you build. Geralt still kills the knight. She is a voice, a local map, and an optional romance you can refuse. Combat remains Geralt’s job.

How to practice before 2027

You cannot enter Letten yet. You can still train the habits the expansion wants. Install Remastered when it lands on 29 September 2026. Relearn dodge timing with the new camera. Play a Toussaint contract while forcing yourself to retarget mid-combo. Put the crossbow on a comfortable button so the chain’s aimed mode will not feel alien. Keep a Blood and Wine save as described in Getting Started. Then, when the 2027 chapter arrives, the first Swarmion is a test of oils and hooks rather than a test of whether your GPU driver survived the upgrade.

Songs of the Past is single-player. There is no other witcher in the session. Your skill ceiling is the same as it was in Toussaint, plus one extra limb that finally matches a picture players have had since 2007.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Songs of the Past, Letten, and the Remastered upgrade.

How does the silver chain work?

It wraps Geralt's arm and uses a quick-use slot like a Sign, bomb, or crossbow. Tap for a fast throw, or aim to slow time and hit weak points. It pulls, crowd-controls, and breaks armored guards such as the Slumbering Knight. Button layouts are in the Controls Guide.

Do Remastered combat changes apply in Letten?

Yes. Songs of the Past requires the free Remastered upgrade. Adaptive camera, retargeting during swings, and the animation pass all carry into the expansion. See the Remastered notes.

Can I ignore the chain and play with swords only?

You can try, but Swarmions and the Slumbering Knight are built around pulls and guard breaks. The new monsters page explains which fights expect the extra slot.

Do conversations really remember random NPC lines?

Preview quests showed a dialogue option unlocking from something Geralt learned in an unrelated talk. Treat investigation as state, not as flavor. The Getting Started guide is still the place to set up a save that actually reaches those talks.

Is this a new combat system for Geralt?

No. Geralt still fights with steel, silver, Signs, and alchemy. The chain is an extra limb on the Remastered foundation, not a replacement class.
