What gamescom actually showed

On 25 August 2026, gamescom Opening Night Live finally put a camera on Letten. The official teaser is SB3siHVCHpY. CD Projekt Red later posted a showcase supercut, G3kuMWediSQ, stitched from the same presentation Miles Tost and the team ran in Cologne. This page does not embed those two videos; it records what the closed-door demos — roughly 45 to 50 minutes, hands-off — put on screen, plus the soundtrack EP that went up a few days later.

The playable slice was an early quest titled A Bed of Thorns. It is not the whole expansion. It is the opening movement: Geralt in Letten after Belleteyn, a tense meal at the de Lettenhove estate, a night ride with Lilla, and a first look at the Garden of Thorns. Letten in daylight

Letten is Dandelion’s homeland, a rural stretch of northern Redania in the orbit of Kovir and Poviss, built at Blood and Wine scale. The demos sold an idyll first: crop fields, a lake you can boat, harvest talk, and a Belleteyn hangover. Geralt wakes in festival clothes because he joined the local fertility-and-harvest night. Level design leads described Polish and English countryside as the visual brief — green, prosperous, and slightly too perfect.

The exception is already on the map: the Garden of Thorns, the one flawed valley people avoid. Geralt mentions dream images of blood, thorns, violets, and a well. Lilla recognizes the family legend. That is the hook. Do not expect a second Toussaint of endless knightly slapstick; the pitch is a land that looks kind until the forest closes.

The estate, Dandelion’s lute, and Lilla

A Bed of Thorns sends Geralt toward the hilltop house where Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, grew up. Previews describe a dockside scuffle over Dandelion’s lute, then the walk up to dinner. The aging matriarch (named Astrid in some write-ups) runs a table that explains why a viscount ran away to become a bard. Lilla, Dandelion’s cousin, sits on the other side of that tension. She is the expansion companion, and she is a romance option. The demo playthrough IGN watched shut the flirtations down — Geralt can stay loyal to Yennefer. Nothing in the footage forces the romance. After sundown the pair meet at the stables and ride into the forest under a full moon. The idyll drops. Lilla is separated in the Garden. The rest of the slice is a witcher contract with family folklore stuck to it: find Dandelion, find the well, find whatever lives in the wood.

The silver chain and the new monsters

The chain is the mechanical headline. It occupies a quick-use slot in the same neighborhood as a Sign or a bomb, not a fourth sword. Demos used it to yank armored or rooted enemies into range, to pick a body part, and to set up a finisher. Miles Tost noted the weapon as a deep cut from the original Witcher’s intro kit. Practice the idea in how to play rather than treating trailer beheadings as a default move.

Two new threats were named on the floor. Thornblooms (also called Thorn Flowers in some recaps) are tall, rooted plants that spit acid at range. Swarmions are ghoul-like humanoids wrapped in a hornet cloud; you do not simply stand in the swarm and Igni through it. A Slumbering Knight / rooted knight figure appears in key art and in the well-bottom tease that ended several demos — the twisted wooden shape from the Opening Night Live trailer. CDPR cut to black there. Treat that creature as a story-center threat, not a bestiary complete. The new monsters page keeps the confirmed kits separate from trailer guesswork.

Remastered systems rode along for the ride: adaptive camera, cleaner gap-closes, Sign-led finishers, and monster behavior that is supposed to match Geralt’s new timing. Those changes arrive 29 September 2026, months before Letten. The chain and the Thornbloom do not.

Soundtrack EP

On 29 August 2026 the official Witcher channel posted a five-track gamescom EP, YouTube ID tIPc6pCbuWk, embedded above. The running order is Into Darkness (Daniel Elms), Awoken (Magda Urbańska), What’s Done (Marcin Przybyłowicz), Return to the Path (Magda Urbańska), and Belleteyn Night (Magda Urbańska). It is a loopable preview, not the full score. Belleteyn Night is the festival cue; What’s Done carries the older Witcher motif language. Use the EP as tone, not as a spoiler map.

New Gwent cards were mentioned in the wider gamescom package. No deck list was handed out in the Letten theatre, so do not proxy a Northern Realms insert from a blurry UI shot.

What gamescom did not settle

No 2027 month. No price. No last-gen SKU. No claim that the 50-minute slice is the opening ten hours. Closed-door footage was a guided presentation, not a hands-on booth build, and some attendees noted the public REDstream later showed overlapping material. If a recap contradicts another recap on Lilla’s exact family title or whether Letten is an island, prefer the official supercut and CDPR’s own Letten copy: Dandelion’s homeland, rural, cursed at the Garden. Then go back to the Letten map and wait for a build you can actually play in 2027.
