What this hub tracks

Songs of the Past is the third paid expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory. It is an upcoming 2027 chapter, not a live product. This hub is the running log of what CDPR has actually confirmed: the May announcement, the quality-driven slip from 2026 into 2027, the gamescom 2026 showings, and the free Remastered upgrade that the expansion requires. Use it to separate press-stage facts from rumor, then jump into the detailed pages. The Opening Night Live conversation with Miles Tost is on the Tost interview page.

27–28 May 2026: the leak that became the announcement

CD Projekt Red planned to reveal Songs of the Past during a REDstreams broadcast on 28 May 2026, timed around Blood and Wine’s tenth anniversary. On 27 May the same post went live early on REDlauncher. Players screenshotted a banner that already named the expansion (and its Polish title, Pieśni przeszłości) and pointed at a 2027 window. The studio leaned into the accident — “law of surprise” — and published the official announcement the same day.

The May note was thin on story and fat on logistics. Geralt returns. Fool’s Theory is the co-developer. Platforms listed at that moment were PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 joined the roster later at gamescom. The same day, CDPR published new minimum PC requirements for the next update of The Witcher 3, because Songs of the Past would sit on that modernized build.

Why 2027, not 2026

Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski later told investors the team had a moment when plans assumed a 2026 ship. Together with the developers, they moved the expansion into 2027 “to achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint.” Treat that as a quality delay, not a cancelled project. No day or month inside 2027 has been named. Do not trust calendars that invent a quarter.

Scope talk from the same period put Songs of the Past closer to Blood and Wine than Hearts of Stone: a new open-world region, not a compact story pack. Price is still TBA. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine later became free for existing owners; this third chapter remains a paid SKU.

August 2026: Opening Night Live and closed-door demos

On 25 August 2026, gamescom Opening Night Live finally showed Letten. The official teaser (YouTube ID SB3siHVCHpY) is the public face of that night; CDPR later posted a showcase supercut (G3kuMWediSQ) for people who could not sit the closed-door sessions. Those sessions ran about 45–50 minutes and walked an early quest, A Bed of Thorns, through the de Lettenhove estate, Lilla, and the Garden of Thorns. The Gamescom 2026 showcase page is the spoiler-light write-up of what demos actually showed, including the silver chain, new monsters, and the five-track soundtrack EP.

Gamescom also locked the commercial frame. Complete Edition became the only purchase SKU of The Witcher 3. Existing owners with or without expansions received Complete Edition. Songs of the Past stayed paid. Wishlist pages went live on Steam (app 5006530), GOG, Epic, Battle.net, PlayStation, Xbox (9NHTWNZCD043), and Nintendo, with thewitcher.com/buy as the official router.

29 September 2026: Remastered, then wait for Letten

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a free upgrade arriving 29 September 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the required path into Songs of the Past. Visuals, ray tracing, combat animations, enemy behavior, movement, an adaptive camera, and a progression rework all land in that build. DirectX 12 only going forward. Windows 11 minimum. SSD required. Read the Remastered notes before you assume last year’s install will load Letten in 2027.

New Gwent cards are promised with the expansion. Cross-platform mod support is listed among Remastered goals and is still in progress — do not plan a 29 September mod loadout around it.

How to use the rest of this wiki

After this hub, the useful split is simple. The Remastered page is the technical and combat changelog. The Gamescom 2026 showcase is the Letten preview. The getting started guide is the save-prep checklist. The official stores page is where you wishlist without key-shop noise. Come back here when CDPR names a 2027 month; until then, the public timeline stops at Remastered.
